OUTDOOR CATTERY
| This is part of our Outdoor Cattery. It is the only area of the outdoor cattery which was never concreted. We are hoping to have this concreted in the coming future as it can become very muddy and messy after heavy or persistent rain and it...... would be much cleaner for the cats if concreted. We have been told it will cost approx £800 to concrete this area properly. We are hoping to raise these funds and have this completed by the summer if possible…..Would you be willing to contribute to help us fix this part of the centre?? We would greatly appreciate any help at all…as would the cats…..!! |

IN MEMORY OF GEMMA LOUISE STEWART
Gemma Louise Stewart died (suddenly) on 7 January 2011, aged 26, in Chicago, USA. She was the dearly loved daughter of Cheryl and Bertie and sister of Rachel and the late Jade formerly of 9 Henry Street, Londonderry. The family emigrated to Vancouver, Canada, just before Gemma turned 3 and since then moved on to Seatle, then Chicago and then California. Gemma spent most of her school years in Chicago and had made lots of friends there who she kept close contact with. In May 2010 Gemma decided to move back there to live.
Gemma loved animals and at the last count had 2 dogs, a cat, a snake and a rat. She went for a job interview at a Vets and although she didn't get the job she came back with a cat. Someone gave her the snake to look after for them and she was told that she would need to feed it some live food now and again so she went out and bought a rat. She said for 2 days the snake sat at one end of its tank and the rat sat at the other just looking at one another. She eventually went and bought a cage for the rat and called it Lucky.
As Gemma loved animals and had friends in many places her family thought that if anyone wanted to give donations in lieu of flowers that they could give it to their local animal shelter. When we heard this we thought that for Gemma's family and friends here it would be very appropriate to send any donations to the Rainbow Centre as we realise the good work that you do and that every penny counts.
We loved Gemma dearly and miss her more than words can say but we know she would be delighted that any donations in her memory have gone to such a worthy cause.
From Gemma's Uncle Lindley, Aunt Shiobhan and Cousins Naomi and Claire. |

2 dogs dumped and left for dead in remote area
| This is "Jodie" and Marshall".....These two innocent dogs were dumped and left for dead in a very remote area just outside Eglinton. A concerned member of the public heard barking and crying when out walking his own dogs so he went further ...into this remote landscape to investigate only to find these 2 dogs hiding in marshlands clearly distressed. Knowing these 2 dogs were not from the surrounding area he was immediately concerned but was unable to get near them as there were so frightened they just ran, not knowing where to turn in the vast marshland. The kind man coaxed them nearer and nearer over 3 days and then rang the centre on Wednesday night to see if we could help catch them. We went equipped with leads, torches and food. We were shocked at just how remote this area was and it was obvious that these dogs had indeed been cruelly abandoned. It took some time to catch them but the food inticed them to us and we managed to get them. They were extremely distressed, frightened, anxious, hungry and dehydrated. They are now being cared for in the centre. If not for the member of the public who alerted us to these two, we can only imagine what would have happened.....They are both lab crosses, both under 2 years old and are both very loving. Shame on the people who left them for dead! |

CAT OWNERS BEWARE - TRAPS FOR BLOODSPORTS BEING USED
Yesterday we were alerted to a cat trapped in a trap behind a hedge in an area of shrubbery / wasteland on the Skeoge industrial site.
Two members of the public out walking their 2 dogs yesterday morning discovered the cat in the homemade cat trap when their dog was barking through the hedge.
Two volunteers from the rainbow centre went to the scene and found the young tabby cat terrified inside the cage.
The trap was a homemade one and whoever made it knew exactly what they were doing.
Police attended the scene and took the trap away.
The cat caught in this trap would have been used as bait for dogs and been ripped to pieces. This blood "sport" is horrific animal cruelty and is on the increase in the Derry area.
We are appealing to the public to be vigilant. Please keep an eye out when out walking for these traps or anyone acting suspicious with dogs. Please alert the Rainbow Centre or the police. Also for cat owners please keep your cats in overnight and don't let them out on an empty stomach as they will be more likely to go into a trap for food.

Due to the significant increase in animal cruelty and neglect cases in the North West and surrounding areas and with a lack of USPCA presence in the North West, members of the public have been increasingly turning to the Rainbow Centre with concerns for animals. In a response to this we have launched a Cruelty Awareness Helpline.

BUYERS BEWARE
Police in Derry are asking pet owners to be wary if offered a chance to buy young pedigree Springer Spaniel pups. The advice follows the fraudulent purchase of two pups from a breeder in the Gorse Road area of Claudy on Sunday 6 Sept.
The pups are ten weeks old and are unusual in that they are black with white rather than white with black. They have a white collar, legs and belly and a black tail with a white tip. Both dogs have pedigree papers and anyone selling these pedigree dogs should be treated with suspicion.
Police are also urging the owners of pedigree dogs with litters to take adequate precautions to protect their pets from theft.
Anyone who is offered a pup in unusual circumstances is asked to contact police at Strand Road CID on 0845 600 8000. Information can also be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
