HORRIFIC ATTACK ON DEFENCELESS PET

Mac

JUSTICE FOR MAC!

DAVID STREETER WITHDRAWS HIS APPEAL - on 1st September in Ballymena high court - David Streeter decided last minute to withdraw his appeal against his 6 month sentence for torturing and killing his ex-wifes 1 year old Golden Retriever Mac. He is now in jail - not for long enough however as the time he will serve does not reflect the brutality of his crime.

On Friday 18th July we held a peaceful demonstration outside the Courthouse for the sentencing of David Streeter of which almost 30 people attended to show their support for our demonstration and disgust at this case of animal cruelty.
David Streeter smirked as he walked past us before entering the courthouse – not a man who looked remorseful for his actions in any way.
A number of us went into the court room to hear the sentencing and as the details of the attack on this dog were read out by the prosecution barrister there was an overwhelming sense of anger in the courtroom.

The post mortem results showed that Mac had suffered severe bruising and swelling to his back and head as well as two broken ribs. There was also evidence of bleeding on his brain and lungs which shows the brutality of this attack and prolonged suffering for Mac.

There has been a lot of media coverage on this case and rightly so because such cases of horrific animal cruelty must be highlighted and condemned publicly.
Streeter has appealed the sentencing and is out on bail. If he was remorseful for his actions as he claims he is he would not be appealing the sentencing but thankful he did not get a longer jail term.
Although we are happy that Streeter will be jailed for his crime we do not feel the sentence is long enough. The judge in the courtroom was genuinely disgusted by Streeter’s actions and not often in Ireland has someone been jailed for cruelty to an animal but a 6 month sentence does not reflect the brutality of such an attack as this was.
What we need is an updated Animal Welfare Legislation with tougher sentences for animal abusers so a zero-tolerance policy is adopted towards such people.
We will be holding another peaceful demonstration outside the specified court on the date of his appeal. If you feel strongly about this case and would like to join us please ring or email us with your details and we will be in touch when we know the date.

JUSTICE FOR MAC!

(Belfast Telegraph article)

At North Antrim Magistrate’s Court, 28-year-old Streeter admitted seven counts of animal cruelty. The ex-wife of Streeter, Alison McMonagle later revealed to the Belfast Telegraph the full shocking extent of the terrifying and painful death inflicted on the defenceless pet dog.

Speaking publicly for the first time about the sickening attack, Alison McMonagle detailed how Streeter hung the one-year-old golden retriever from the rafters in the garage and then viciously beat him in a terrifying attack spanning two days, before eventually killing the dog.

Ms McMonagle said the attack on Mac began after Streeter accused her of spending too much money. She recalled the horrific death Mac endured; “He started punching and kicking him and Mac ran behind a wall. Dave lifted a boulder and threw it at him. Then he put Mac in his kennel and put a hose in and told me ‘The b******* will drown’.
“He took him into the garage and tied him by his choker chain to the roof. He came back into the house and he was laughing at me. He was saying, ‘The f*****’s claws are scraping on the ground”.

Streeter even took the time to change into steel toe capped boots to cause greater injury to the pet dog, before hanging him by the neck from the rafters in the garage of the family home. “He went upstairs and came back down in his steel toe capped boots and went back out saying, ‘The f****** will feel this here’.
“The next day he went out and hung Mac in the garage again. He kept coming back into the house and giving me reports on what was happening. He came in said, ‘That will help him, I have just put a boot in his head’ and then he came back later and told me Mac was dead.’

“I didn’t believe him but when I went out to the garage and saw Mac lying there I knew he had suffered a terrible death. You could see the pain in him.”

During the two-day attack, Ms McMonagle made numerous unsuccessful attempts to help Mac.
She said: “At one stage Dave put Mac in the kennel and told me not to go near him. I was really frightened. He used to tell me he knew how to make a person disappear. He told me all he had to do was mince the body and feed it to pigs.”

And in a cruel addition, Ms McMonagle revealed her former husband forced her to help him dig a grave for Mac.
Speaking after Streeter dramatically changed his plea, animal-loving Ms McMonagle, who received overwhelming support from Rainbow Rehoming Centre as she prepared to face her violent husband in court, said: “I’m absolutely delighted with the result. I always said I would put Mac to rest and I’ve done that today.”

Ms McMonagle said she took the difficult decision to speak about her ordeal in an attempt to bring an end to domestic abuse and animal cruelty.

Resident Magistrate, Mr McFarland, adjourned the hearing to allow for the preparation of reports on Streeter.
During an earlier bail hearing, Lord Justice Nicholson told Streeter: "Despite your denials, I can't believe your wife would invent stories about this dog and the cruelty displayed by you is beyond belief. It was a horrific attack and it is very rare that one comes across cruelty of this kind but it shows that you have some mental illness of some kind."
